Issues of environmental protection have been highly focused these years. AEGIS MMI Marine has always been eager to be the environment protector of our earth, provide the solution and constantly seeking promising new products to saving our world. Today’s topic: “The antifouling paints and the world of marine life.” We would like to talk about how the new technology brings both efficiency and eco-friendly to new antifouling paint.

Traditional antifouling paints containing tri-butyl-tin (TBT) had been prohibited from January 2008 according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s new regulations. Currently, most antifouling paints use cuprous oxide (copper) instead. It does prevent the most situation of marine growth, and stop the damages caused by the attachment of crustaceans and other marine growth, reducing the possibility of algae, weed attach also reducing the weight-gaining of the attachment that could affect the fuel-efficiency and performance. However, this kind of paint cannot completely stop the marine organism growing; it can only reduce the adhering time. Once the organism attach to the hull, it will die out because of cuprous oxide. Both tin and copper are toxic to marine life, which is why they work, but they also erode or wash off into sea water with time being, and then interfering with the reproductive cycles of marine life.







AEGIS MMI Marine announces with pride a newly developed paint additive using micro-ceramic technology, which features:
1. Slowing the dissolution rate of paint, reducing the amount the paint wash off into the sea.
2. Bio-ingredients prevent sea-shell growing.
3. Micron powder filling in the surface and preventing the spores of algae and seaweed adhering to the hull.

In other words, it restrains the growing environment onboard for marine organisms at very first step. It also saves labor and time on the regular hull maintenance of painting every year (since you may don’t have any marine organisms on the hull). The cleaning process requires only using the high pressure water to wash down other attachment, manual work is no longer needed to scrape off the seashell, algae, and polishing. Secondly, the paint additive totally preventing the adherence of the marine organisms, hence only one coat of the paint is required in the painting process, which also significantly reduces the amount of usage of the paint. Thirdly, with less or no algae, seaweed and seashell attached, high fuel-efficiency is achieved through the minimization of the flow resistance. In summary, this paint additive is both eco-friendly and budget-friendly.

※This paint additive has been experimented by research centers in Taiwan. It is highly evaluated in preventing and reducing the attachment of algae, seaweeds and barnacles.
