REPAIR LEAKING PORTLIGHTS
REPAIRING LEAKING PORTLIGHTS:

1. Usually the leak develops because the seal between the frame and glass is worn, to repair remove the old gasket using a sharp metal object, such as a knife, awl or, narrow chisel and scrap away all the old adhesive, this is very critical to remove all the old adhesive.

2. Wipe down the gasket area with Isopropyl(rubbing) alcohol and make sure it is completely clean, a clean dry surface is key to a good bond.

3. Now you can start to apply a new gasket, first apply a thin uniform coat of adhesive, we recommend the 3M gasket adhesive model #08001,allow adhesive to dry until tacky then starting near a hinge push the lip of the gasket into the space where the old gasket was removed, carefully cut gasket to length forming a butt joint then apply small amount of adhesive to either side of the joint, carefully go back and apply pressure to the entire gasket, pressure is needed to assure proper adhesion.

4. Gaskets come in all shapes and sizes depending on the type and make of the portlight and MMI carries most types of gasket material. If the leak is not occurring because of old gasket material the problem may be with the seal between the window frame and the fiberglass part of the boat, this is a much bigger problem and will be covered as a separate topic.
