☻NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION☻
Revised 10 March 2008

Xantrex has just introduced a new model inverter/charger to replace the old model SW 4024 still fondly referred to as the Trace inverter. The new version has all the old features plus many new ones that will greatly enhance their use in marine applications.

As a brief background we have been using a so called Trace stack of two SW4024’s to produce 120/240 VAC single phase 60 Hz power on vessels destined for the USA. This stack acted as a giant uninterruptible power supply that allows continuous power flow to critical users even during power interruptions and changeovers – all without expensive and complex synchronization packages. The package also allowed a second source of power to be brought directly to the inverters thus enabling an additional 50 amps of shore power to be available if desired. We also would provide an emergency transfer switch to allow bypass of the inverters if one were to fail.

The new XW Hybrid is very different but at the same time almost a direct replacement for the SW4024 stack. A single XW4024 unit has a 120/240 single phase 60 Hz output. It can operate by itself supplying up to 4000 watts continuous power or transferring up to 60 amps of power from another source. This means we can use a single inverter where loads allow it and still be able to balance our loads on both L1 and L2 on the output side. This was always a problem before with a single inverter since its total load was on one leg.

If the vessel needs more power than one inverter can provide they can be ganged together (up to three) using a provided network cable and the multiple units can all be monitored by one remote head – much improved over the older units. If one inverter fails in the group the others can continue to provide full service although at an obviously lower capacity until the faulty unit can be replaced.

Xantrex also provides as an option a XM Power Distribution Panel which incorporates all the required AC and DC circuit breakers and in the case of one or two units ganged together it will include the emergency transfer switch. Xantrex also has a XW Conduit box which fits below each inverter and neatly covers the unit’s exterior wiring. Also a XW connection kit is available with the wires and breakers needed to add a second inverter. While the OEM can easily install the basic units with factory wiring and circuit breaker panels, the Xantrex package makes for a very neat and compact installation meeting all codes here in the US. The total package for an 8000 watt two unit package with conduit and distribution panel would measure 30” high by 48” wide and 9” deep. Total weight would be about 250 pounds.

Attached to this memo are the Xantrex spec sheet and the installation manual in .pdf form. They also have an outstanding web site at www.xantrex.com. I have also attached a generic design using the Xantrex units along with Charles automatic switching equipment to show a typical installation. This one has a small night gen set and we make use of the Xantrex AC input #2 to provide automatic seamless transfer to that generator.

A complete 8000 watt inverter/charger installation would require the following items.

2 XW4024-120/240 -60 XW Hybrid Inverter/Chargers
1 865-1015 XW Power Distribution Panel
1 865-1020 XW Connection Kit for Second Inverter
2 865-1025 XW Conduit Box

And if remote control is desired

1 865-1050 XW System Control Panel

A 4000 watt installation would only require:

1 XW4024-120/240 -60 XW Hybrid Inverter/Charger
1 865-1015 XW Power Distribution Panel
1 865-1025 XW Conduit Box

Hopefully the above will help answer any concerns you have with the transition to the new product. For European use Xantrex will continue to produce the 50 Hz SW4024 240 Volt unit until the XW Hybrid is developed further for that market.
